Weather delay to cross Shelikof strait:

23rd – 25th  July

Long island was just an hour away from Kodiak and was a lovely calm lagoon to overnight at. Johann, Josh and Natasha went for a walk thru the forest to see the WW2 guns and barracks that was built to defend against an expected Japanese invasion.

The next morning we left early to hit the slack tides at Ouzinki and Whale Pass to get thru. Both boats anchored overnight in Dry Spruce Bay along Kupreanof Strait to check the forecast to give us the green light to cross Shelikof Strait to Geographic Harbour. A nasty bit of water to cross and not to be taken lightly.

The forecast was for west 15 knot winds and 5 foot seas which sounded good after days of heavy winds. We departed 0500 in calm conditions and never saw more than 15 knots of wind with 3-4 foot swells. As we neared the entrance to Geographic Harbour the clouds lifted allowing us to see the dramatic landscape of the Katmai National Park. Just stunning and Geographic Harbour did not disappoint either.
