Our Journey on Scolamanzi II

An Incredible Attenborough Moment with Humpback Whales:

Upon exiting Grenville Channel channel, we noticed 2 whales bubble feeding along the shore. With great care Johann slowly inched closer until we were less than 50 meters from them and then followed them for about one hour as they slowly made their way along the coast, feeding as they went. Getting that close to them for that long was one of our best experiences ever with whales.  It was simply unbelievable! A moment I will find very hard to erase from my memory bank.

It was fascinating watching their technique. They dive down and then release a curtain of bubbles that herd the herring like a net. Once they closed the circle of bubbles, they both come up in the center with their huge mouths scooping up a much of the school of fish as they can get. We witnessed this same process being repeated about 10 times. Same technique every time.

(It is hilarious to watch the video Johann was making – all you hear is me gasping of excitement and the endless click-click-click sound of my camera in fast mode! As soon as we can upload it to YouTube, I will post it here)
